How the YouTube thumbnail downloader works

Every YouTube video is stored with several pre-generated thumbnail images at fixed URLs based on its video ID, ranging from a tiny 120×90 preview up to a 1280×720 "maxresdefault" version. This tool reads the video ID out of the link you paste and lists all of them directly, so there's nothing to scrape or guess.

Why the maxres size sometimes fails

Not every upload has a maxresdefault image - it depends on the resolution the video was uploaded in. If that image looks broken or gray, the high-quality (480×360) or standard (640×480) version will still be there and is usually good enough for previews, thumbnails in a video editor, or a blog post reference.
